ABC: AN ICON
ABC is a vibrant mix of work and social spaces within the unique cluster of three re-defined 1960s buildings. These symbolic buildings have been re-imagined and re-adapted by Allied London to preserve the distinctive design and architecture, while creating a modern workspace for corporate, professional, media, technology and creative businesses.
This project showcases the power of adaptive reuse over new construction. Through sustainable design and refurbishment ABC has become a thriving community for work and leisure. Within the building you’ll find a rich mix of retail and leisure including Everyman Cinema, Barry’s Bootcamp, ABC Gallery, Side Street, Clints and Permanent Orbit. ABC is tailored for modern business; the bespoke workspaces providing everything needed to excel at the highest industry levels.
An ABC highlight is ‘The Dome’, a striking glass dome atop Building C. This unique space is ideal for creative showcases, live events, industry gatherings and celebrations.
As a carefully curated work and social complex, ABC is a cornerstone of one of Manchester’s most creative districts, steadily growing its influence in the city’s creative, media and production landscape. At the heart of ABC’s vision is a commitment to fostering this growth and unlocking the full potential of this vibrant destination.

HISTORY
The Sixties was a transformative decade, shaping culture, design and innovation in ways that still resonate today. The ABC Buildings, completed in 1965, are a proud testament to that era’s enduring legacy. Rather than letting Astley & Byrom House become a memory of the past, we chose to preserve and celebrate these architectural icons, ensuring their relevance for generations to come.
While the ‘A’ and ‘B’ in ABC were already in place, the question arose – where did the ‘C’ come from? Inspiration struck in the form of a Sixties symbol synonymous with bold design and forward thinking: the Mini Cooper. As Paul Smith once said, "You can find inspiration everywhere; you just need to know where and how to look." For us, the Mini Cooper – created the same year as the ABC Buildings – captured the ingenuity and spirit of innovation that defined the decade. And so, the ‘C’ in ABC became a tribute to this icon, forever linking our story to the Sixties’ legacy of creativity and progress.
The influence of this remarkable decade is woven into every corner of ABC, creating an atmosphere that pays homage to one of the most iconic eras of design, culture and art. Throughout the building, we have intentionally curated a collection of Sixties-inspired elements that are all carefully chosen to reflect the ingenuity and charm of sixties design. As you explore ABC, you’ll discover subtle nods and striking references to the era’s most celebrated design moments, creating an inspiring experience at ABC.
